VIDEO: Bonin Bough addresses FlashFWD launch party crowd

While Jesse and Emily were in San Francisco getting ready for the launch party at Yoshi’s, I headed over to Trump Soho for Bonin Bough’s book signing event.  I stole him from his event for a few minutes, so I could record a personal message to everyone at the launch party.

However, due to technical difficulties at Yoshi’s, we weren’t able to show this amazing video at our FlashFwd launch party last night, but we’re happy to have Pepsi and the visionary Bonin Bough on board.

#FlashFWD 2011

Headed back from a great SF MusicTech conference where Jesse Kirshbaum and I had the pleasure of announcing the launch of the 2nd annual FlashFWD campaign.  It was great to meet the music x tech community on the west coast and look forward to seeing many of them at SXSW in March and at the conference next year.

Thanks so much to our new partners Brian and Shoshana Zisk from #SFMusicTech and our amazing SoundCtrl board especially Tiffany Hardin, Matt Graham, Alex Kirshbaum, and Dave Chaitt.  And finally, none of this would be possible without the amazing support of our brand partners Pepsi, Eventbrite and dotMusic, who have been by our side from the beginning.

Please help spread the word about our campaign & nominate an innovator here:

If you’ve been reading for a while, you know about FlashFwd and the success we had with the inaugural event.  For those of you who haven’t, it’s a competition for innovation in music technology and the subsequent award ceremony is held at SXSW to honor the five winners.  This past year, our winners were Hype MachineBig LiveIndabaRockdex, and Jingle Punks.  Next year:  who knows?

Next Monday (December 6), board members of SoundCtrl will be flying out to San Francisco for SF Music Tech Summit to host an after party and networking event. This event will mark the official announcement of the FlashFwd II campaign and event.  You can RSVP for this free event here and find more info on the flyer below.

3 questions with…Paul from Dscover.me

0

Using dscover.me, users can, “automagically share what you’re up to on the web with friends and followers in real-time.”  It’s is entirely free to use and is available currently for the Chrome extension.

After getting their private beta launch press release, I reached out to founder Paul Jones to see if he’d be interested in chatting about the applicability of dscover.me on the music industry.  This is what I asked him:

Your tag line closer, “…with a little help from your friends,”  is obviously a play on the Beatles song.  That being said, how do you find Dscover.me to be relevant to the music industry?

For the music industry, dscover.me is a wonderful tool that bands and band members can use to promote their website, music, and merchandise to fans as well as connect to them on a personal level.  Fans love to see what their favorite bands and band members are reading, listening to, and watching online, and we created the first tool to make this process seamless for bands and fans alike.   For example, a band could join and then ask their fans to follow them on dscover.me.   They could then start sharing with their fans new music videos they have put online, new press, and just what they do on a day to day basis.  It would allow them to develop a new kind of relationship with fans that is different than what they get from something like Twitter.

Why bother using Dscover.me when people can go to Foursquare, Twitter, Yelp, or Facebook for recommendations from people in their network?

I think the big difference between the sites you mention and us is that we offer users and bands the ability to share by just clicking a link.  It takes no work at all.  When you arrive at dscover.me the first time, you set a whitelist of sites you are comfortable sharing from.  Thereafter, as you move across the web and click on links at those sites, those get shared with all of your friends and followers.  The sites you mention all require you to actively click a share button, or write a review, or copy and paste in a link.   That takes time.

What are some goals for 2011?

Our goals for 2011 is to first grow our user base and then roll out the next version of our product which will allow users to see which of their friends and people they follow clicked on a link when they arrive at another site.  We are really excited about the idea of being able to see which of our friends or which celebrity watched a particular music video on Youtube or Vevo when I click on it.  That is exciting and we think that a large number of users around the world will be as excited about this as much as we are.
