3 questions with…Alex from Tastebuds.fm

Posted on | November 5, 2010 | No Comments

I recently wrote an article called “Music and” about how the future of music will be as a pairing with something else such as food, art, film, games, or fashion.  When I wrote this, the concept of music and dating didn’t cross my mind, but the more I think about it, the more it makes sense.  You can tell a lot about a person by what music they listen to.  Enter Tastbuds.fm.  Tastebuds is a dating site that generates matches for you based on music preference.

Through email, I asked founder Alex Parish a few questions:

1. Why music and dating?

As musicians and avid music fans ourselves we’ve always been interested in the idea that music taste can say a lot about a person and that for some people it is an important factor when choosing a potential partner. As Rob from the movie High Fidelity says, “I agreed that what really matters is what you like, not what you are like… Books, records, films — these things matter. Call me shallow but it’s the fuckin’ truth”. So we started Tastebuds.fm to explore this idea. We’ve found from feedback we’ve got from our users that for many of them this is indeed something that they place an emphasis on in their own experiences. At the very least it’s an interesting common ground to spark a conversation with someone which can be just as good a starting point as the fact that you both like red wine and walks along the beach.

2. What is the revenue model?

Currently the service is completely free to users. We’re focusing solely on product development and promotion at the moment in order to grow the user base substantially and reach critical mass. Once we reach the point where we feel there is a desire among our users for premium features we plan to release premium membership along the ‘freemium’ model. This is where the service is free for some users and paid for others for premium features such as priority listing in search results, more advanced messaging and mobile apps.

3. What are some goals for 2011?

Our plans for 2011 are mostly to work hard at growing the user base by further promotion and feature development. To do this we will be pitching for angel investment to finance marketing and business operations. In terms of feature development, we will be hoping to launch mobile apps for both iPhone and Android platforms as well as new features particularly focused around the events industry. Our primary goal is to reach 10,000 users (currently around 6,000) and with extra promotion we expect to hit 25,000 by April 2011.

If what Alex said peaks your interest, please at the very least, check out the site.
