Ghostly International, home of two of my more recent favorites–Dabrye and Deastro–released an iPhone app with great success last July considering they haven’t done much publicity to push it.
In the app, the user chooses a mood using a color wheel. Then, they adjust the equalizer to convey their preferences on digital:organic and faster:slower. After the user has chosen their desired mood and equalizer preferences, the app chooses a suitable 20-song playlist of music from Ghostly’s full catalog for the user to listen, read more about the artists, and potentially purchase the songs.
A few days ago, my roomie Jeff showed it to me and I was completely blown away. Not many record labels do iPhone apps (successfully). Ghostly’s is both fun, interactive, and SIMPLE for the user, so they keep coming back. It also has value for Ghostly since the user can purchase all the music easily from the iTunes store as well as save their mood-generated playlists online.
Oddly enough, my buddy Todd from ARMS came over on Saturday to play a show in my backyard. He also works for Ghostly and gave my friends and I the full scoop on how it was conceived. Also, as turns out, he did the voice over work on the video below.
More importantly, Todd connected me with Miguel Senquiz who worked on the user interface for the app. While he was walking from work to visit his girlfriend, we had a chance to chat over the phone. His overall sentiment is that, by using the app, there is a “lower barrier of entry for our music, so people don’t get caught on classification or genre.”
With the diversity of their catalog and the overall confusion over the music’s various niche subgenres, it just seemed easier for them to allow people to “use color and mood to experience all the music we have to offer,” continued Miguel.
He went to mention that since launching in July of last year, they have surpassed 80,000 downloads including a large spike after getting featured in the iTunes store.
All I know is that I may have a Blackberry, but I’m very close to buying an iPod Touch just for this app. Alright, maybe not just for this app, but it is definitely helping sway me in that direction. So log into the iTunes store and download it today FOR FREE!
