Sony Announces Tiered Subscriptions, Free Trials for Music Unlimited

by Dave Mainella

Sony announced on Wednesday that its Music Unlimited cloud-based, streaming music service now offers new monthly subscription tiers.  The price for “Access” starts at $4.99 per month, giving users the ability to stream millions of songs via PCs, Mac, and PlayStation 3.  Premium service costs $9.99 per month and includes access on mobile devices, as well as interconnectivity between all compatible technologies.

Sony offers a free 14-day, no credit card Premium service trial for new customers, and they extend the trial to a 60 days for new customers with compatible mobile devices, including the new Sony Xperia smartphone and tablet, Android smartphones and tablets, Apple iPhone and iPod Touch, and PlayStation Vita.

“Digital music subscription services represent a huge shift in the way people listen to music, and our goal is to provide users with easy and convenient access to songs they love,” said Tim Schaaff, President of Sony Network Entertainment International. “The growing list of compatible devices and new subscription opens the Music Unlimited service library to more people around the world at a very attractive price.”

With prices equal to those at Spotify, which also provides $9.99 and $4.99 subscriptions, Sony certainly offers an alternative.  But as Spotify continues to make news as the music streaming leader, it remains to be seen whether or not Sony has the ability to truly compete.
