RIP…Lala

I have been a HUGE fan of Lala since I met founder Bill Nguyen at CMJ two years ago. The online service allows people to stream songs once for free and then they can opt to “purchase” the music to stream online forever for 10¢.
However, the site plans to shut down on May 31. After being bought by Apple in December for a reported $80M, Apple had all of the intentions of using Lala’s cloud technology to back up people’s bought iTunes songs online. However, just ten days ago I asked Bruce Houghton aka Hypebot what Apple’s intentions were beyond Lala’s cloud technology. His “gut” told him that Lala would be going away. I had no clue that it would be this soon…tears.
