I got introduced to Gobbler a few weeks ago. When I read more about the company, I found out that they backed up pro-audio files through an easy-to-use desktop software.
I immediately responded to founder Chris Kantrowitz saying, “I personally could have used this in November when an ‘infallible drive’ crashed…this is something I would pay for!”
Below is a few questions I asked him. Hope you find as much value in his product as I have.
1. How is Gobbler different than a digital locker such as Dropbox and what are 3 of Gobblers’ advantages?
Gobbler is very different from Dropbox. The only thing we really have in common is that we both use Amazon web services.
That’s where the similarities end. Gobbler is designed from the ground up to be an application for pro-audio. I’ll list some f our major differences.
- Dropbox requires you to put all of the files you’d like to back up in the “Dropbox” folder on your main computer. Gobbler will back projects up from any connected device (an external drive a thumb drive, a firewire drive ect)
- With Gobbler you can projects of any size to any of your collaborators. With Dropbox you can only send a project as large as the available space on your collaborators Dropbox account.
- Gobbler helps organize all of your projects no matter where they are stored. Dropbox is a folder on your drive you can save things in but it’s up to you to organize them.
- Dropbox runs constantly in the background and we check to see if you are recording or using a DAW. If we detect this we sleep so we do not get in the way of your recording.
We are a different piece of software and the only one on the market designed for pro-audio.
2. Gobbler is currently free, but you mentioned that that will change by the end of the year. What are some pricing models you’re considering?
We are going to have a freemium model. Users will get a small amount of space for free. We are doing this for 2 reasons.
- Try it and love it then pay for it
- To allow people to take advantage of the speed of receiving files through gobbler even if they don’t feel like paying for the product.
3. What are some goals for the end of 2011?
2011 will be a big year.
- Launching our mobile app
- Launching PC versions
- Launching Gobbler for other media types
- Closing our “A” round
- Announcing our killer board of advisers
- Announcing amazing artist endorsements
- Making everyone smile
If you’re interested, download the software and use it for free for the duration of the summer. No reason not to give it a shot.
