I had been a huge fan of Extension.fm when I was using the Chrome browser after seeing CEO Dan Kantor speak at a NY Music Tech Meetup, but since jumping back to Firefox a year ago, I’d just hoped they would branch out to other browsers (but more on that later).
I had somewhat forgotten about Ex.fm until I was at SXSW a few weeks ago at a Tumblr event when I saw a tall, skinny man with a black Flyers hat. Being Philly born and raised, I instinctively commented on the hat as an ice breaker into a conversation. This person turned out to be Charles Smith, the COO of Ex.fm.
After SXSW, we connected through email since he told me some great future plans for the company, so I asked him a few questions in the hope he could share them with our community.
1. It’s not really internet radio, so do how you define Ex.fm?
We define exfm as a social music discovery service. It incorporates elements of radio and a music library to enable you to find the best new music for you and your friends.
2. How do you plan on monetizing Ex.fm?
We have a ton of ideas on how to monetize, but no definitive plans. We believe that we’ll be able to aggregate great data about what bands are getting hot, who’s making them hot and where, which will give us plenty of monetization opportunities.
3. What are some goals for end of 2011?
Our goals for 2011 include making the service more accessible without the use of the Chrome extension, broadening the service’s appeal to a mainstream audience and raising our visibility within the music blogging community.
For the time being, all they have is a Chrome extension, so if you’re a Chrome user, feel free to download it here.
