Stealth. Covert. Undetectable. – That is not the byline of the next Daniel-Craig saves-the-world movie, but company EarHero’s description of their EarHero earphones. Founded by clinical audiologist/inventor Matt Murphy, EarHero’s slim shape (4.3 x 5.6 x 2.8 mm) prevents it from blocking listeners’ ear canals but still allowing “whisper level sounds” to be heard. Why would anyone purchase noise-cancellation earphones purposefully designed to allow outside sounds in while listening to music? Earhero believes joggers, bike riders, as well as walk-and-texters would purchase it to fully enjoy an isolating audio experience while being aware of their surroundings (read: an oncoming pick up truck). With over 1,000 people going to the emergency room each year due to using their cell phone while walking, EarHero’s ergonomic features address a growing concern.
The design is as user-conscious as the functionality with its lightweight (<0.27 grams) and translucent wires being fairly unnoticeable to anyone, including the person wearing the earphones. That would pose a problem if EarHero’s earphones were not also equipped with a retention lock which keeps the speakers in line preventing ear irritation or fatigue from continuous use. With a standard 3.5mm headphone jack and compact carrying case, EarHero’s earphones ensure a truly undisruptive, portable music experience.
At $149, EarHero’s earphones are more expensive than the Beats by Dre’s now-$86 iBeats with ControlTalk In-Ear Headphones yet much cheaper than the Shure SE425 earphones priced at $299. Given the ergonomic design and revolutionary noise cancellation techniques, the EarHero earphones’ price makes it attractive to both serious listeners looking to save $100 on blocking out the world and the common man looking to be able to run with ACDC blasting and not worry about oncoming (foot) traffic.
