Groceries can be musical too. Korean designer Lee Ha Lim, with graphic designer Kim Yong Duk, has found a way to create instrumentals using programmed barcodes, like the ones in supermarkets. Their so-called “Barcode Band” uses mini barcode readers to scan lines of barcodes, programming different codes to create different sounds, from guitars and synthesizers to drums and bass.
Looping the sounds and scanning the barcodes one after another can create an impressive display of electronic and sample-based music. And simultaneously using multiple scanners with many codes adds a collaborative element that makes the “band” a fun performance to watch.
