Those sporting grills, the mouth piece jewelry of hip hop fame, can now enjoy music via their teeth. Aisen Chacin, an artist at Parsons The New School for Design, has created a grill with a tongue-controlled MP3 player.
The Play-A-Grill relies on bone conduction to transfer sound to the ear drum. An embedded vibrating motor is connected to the headphone jack of MP3 player inside the retainer-like mold worn in the roof of a mouth. The vibrations pass through the teeth and through the skull. The player’s controls face downward so they can be controlled with the tongue.
“The Play-A-Grill attempts to provide a display that challenges our perception of listening, altering the body’s natural sound output and relocating as an input,” Chacin says in the complete report that can be read here.
