This past Tuesday, music download and distribution site Liquid Spins announced the addition of 7.5 million songs by teaming up with independent music distributor the Orchard. The news establishes a musical collection that includes popular songs from the major labels, and now, a strong independent presence to encourage user discovery and provide distribution for up-and-coming artists.
The Orchard has been a player since 1997, helping to distribute and market independent film and music. With the addition of it’s catalogue, CEO John Blaisure estimates that Liquid Spins now offers over 90 percent of the world’s most popular music. “With approximately 10 million songs to choose from,” he continues, “Liquid Spins can now seriously compete in the growing digital download music space.”
Liquid Spin was acquired late last year by MAX-D, an HD Audio Company that “makes everything sound better and can convert any audio file to high definition quality while significantly reducing the file size.” All Liquid Spin users receive a free Liquid Spins HD Audio App featuring MAX-D technology. And the app has caught on quickly, with over 10,000 downloads over the first 72 hours of its release.
The December acquisition emphasized Liquid Spin’s QR code marketing (those barcode-like pictures read by smartphones and scanners) and their contracts with the likes of Sony, Universal, and Warner Music. But bringing the Orchard into play is a smart move, creating the opportunity to offer a centralized independent music distribution and consumption channel.
Competition is fierce between digital download platforms like iTunes and Amazon, particularly for the most popular songs and classics. Liquid Spins is smart to bring in other content; the major label chart-toppers might find play and sales through Liquid Spins if the independent scene is allowed to blossom.
